Saving the Youths
That Monday morning, I was feeling so tense. I had booked myself airtime with the KPNX-TV. I had applied severally without any success. The aim of my application all along had been to secure a platform where I can reach out to any watching youth or parent/ guardian who hails from Arizona. For so long, I had been perturbed by the plight of the youth. I had come across disturbing research findings that elucidated the status of the youths in Arizona State – not ready to become citizens, not employable. I felt no one had seemed to care about the news and researches about our 16-25 years of the age cohort. Yes, I had moved about with the Faith-Based Organizations (FBO) establishing projects aimed at saving the youth – which failed a few days after establishment for lack of support – but I never seemed to feel as if enough was done.
Immediately I arrived in the media house, I was lead to the section where I was to make my presentation, and there I was live. I had prepared a presentation on why youths indulge in crime. Firstly I postulated the issue of poor parenting. I unabashedly pointed out that right from childhood, youths lack nurturant adults. Parents and guardians are busily carried away by their jobs. No one to monitor what the youths are watching at home, no one to help children observe dietary precautions, no one to encourage constructive exercise and healthy physical play, and no one to influence holistic development of the children and youths when they are at home. Secondly, I corrected the notion amongst people in Arizona that youths are mature and should be left on their own. I elucidated the significance of endless guidance and counseling. I congratulated the role of the FBOs in youth mentorship. Nonetheless, I pointed out that the effort was not enough, and there was the need for numerous mentorship programs to be instigated in the State with a consultation with the youths.
Thirdly, I emphasized the significance of enforcing education amongst the youths. I proposed that the parents and guardians of children and youths who were not attending schools have the law run after them. I insisted that it is only in school where attitudes can be molded. I did not forget to mention that most youths brush shoulders with the law because of ignorance. I elucidated the curriculum should be customized to integrate citizenship and critical thinking and problem solving into teaching and learning. Lastly, I addressed my State government. I advised the government to encourage investment in our State so that employment opportunities can crop up. I did not forget to state that an enabling environment for self-employment should be developed and the youths empowered using all mechanisms available to ensure they develop income-generating ventures.
When the time to go came, I remember how I walked my shoulders high. I felt I was already a mentor for the youth and their spokesperson. Actually, it is just the other day that I noticed that that day, I had unknowingly practiced the strategic goal of sociology. I’m positive that in life, I will make a very instrumental youth mentor and worker, especially in the State Department of youth affairs.
Summary Phrase: There are many ways of saving the youths. Expressing the plight of the youth could be a step to availing a long-lasting panacea to the plight of the youth and their engagement to crime.
