Think of a typical college student. Explain, giving examples, how the student may acquire an abnormal behavior through any two of the following: (a) Operant conditioning (b) Classical conditioning (c) Modeling
Modeling
Modeling has a significant effect on a typical college student. Alcohol drinking is one of the most acquired strange behavior by teenagers. With opportunity and curiosity, teenagers are most likely to experiment with alcohol with a perception of gaining prestige. A college student can be involved in alcohol drinking through observing and imitating their peers.
Lying is another abnormal behavior that a typical college student can acquire through modeling. Most of these teens consider the easy methods of solving problems than the right way. For example, as a grown adult with free time and idleness, it’s easier for a college student to get into trouble in their actions with less knowledge on how to solve problems. Observing the other peer who had the same problem and used lies to get out, there is a high possibility to lie just like the mate.
Experimenting with risky behavior is an abnormal behavior that college students can acquire through modeling. Experimenting with unprotected sex, speed driving, and rock climbing is a dangerous situation that might cause danger if done recklessly. Most of these college students may enter this abnormal behavior by observing and imitating their models.
Operant conditioning
An inappropriate dressing code is an abnormal behavior that a college student can acquire through operant learning. In past ages, modesty and grandeur were rewarded but with changing times, fashionable and valued by the youths is inappropriate dressing like several piercing, provocative clothes and sagging trousers. A college student gets a positive reinforcement the more problematic the dressing code is. With indecent dressing, one can acquire fame. This behavior has been developed by many of the college students as a show of prowess. With reinforcement, there are high chances of this behavior being repeated.
Disrespectfulness has been one of abnormal behavior that has been rewarded among youths. These college students have associate disrespect with bravery. With democracy, where freedom of speech and expression is not restricted, college students have reinforced disrespect as a way of showing their fearless nature verbally. It’s not the right thing that society expects of any person and should be punished.
