Consider the lobster
‘Consider the Lobster’, is an article by David Foster Wallace where he discusses in-depth about the lobsters, e.g. where they are found, how to cook them. A party called Maine Lobster festival is held every year in July in the states’ mid-coast region. A lobster is a marine crustacean, has five pairs of jointed legs, eyes, gills and antennae (Wallace 1). They exist from the Jurassic period hence older than Mammalians. Although lobster meat has a lot of advantages to the human body than other meat, we should also consider them as living creatures and not only food.
Lobster meat is sweet, a juicy delicacy. It has a higher nutritional value than many types of fish. In the US lobster meat is one of the expensive steak dishes. It has fewer calories, less cholesterol and fat than chicken meat. It can be cooked by boiling, frying, steaming, grilling and baking. However, boiling is the most common method since it can be quickly done at home. Mostly, they are cooked when alive making them the freshest meat since there is no decomposition between harvesting and consumption.
Other than considering lobsters as food only they should also be considered as living creatures. Lobsters are delicate and sensitive creatures to minor changes like a single degree change in temperature. They feel pain, and when exposed to extreme conditions, they badly suffer since they cannot go into shock. When stressed, they react like humans by searching for safer places. It is unfair watching a live lobster suffer in a pot of boiling water just because of our cravings.
While lobster meat is very nutritious, we should also treat them fairly. We should try gathering knowledge about them from their researches because we can’t understand their language. They are unique creatures that feel pain, have anxiety and social relations like humans. They deserve our care and protection like fellow human beings. Replacing an animal-based meal with plant-based meals is a better way of reducing animal suffering and caring for them.
