DISCUSSION

Regarding reliability and safety, nuclear power plants produce massive base-load power increments. Additionally, this energy source has undergone numerous reforms after accidents such as at Chernobyl and TMI, contributing to a more robust safety culture within the sector (Sovacool, 2010). Although the chances of an actual meltdown taking place are minimal, such an event’s effects would be large. Fossil fuels are capable of satisfying the needs of the European Union since they are plenty in supply. With constantly evolving technology, refinery and extractions processes have also scaled upwards, making fossil fuels more reliable. Fossil fuels produce a lot of energy and are therefore very efficient. Even though wind turbines and hydropower may seem a better alternative, they still have significant challenges explored in this paper.
