Discussion One.
The Mosuo society seems to be empowering women by allowing them to inherit their matriarch homes. Most cultural practices favor men and give them the right to be in charge of the matriarch homes since women are expected to get married and leave their homes. On the other hand, the Mosuo society has failed to empower women to be in charge of wealth. In as much as women are expected to more, men are in the custody of looking after the finances. In my opinion, there is no gender equality in Mosuo society. This is because girls are not given the opportunity to have an education like boys. When girls stick around to help with the house chores, the culture allows boys to be free hence having time to attend school (“Mosuo Society,” 2021).
Discussion two.
Mosuo society gives an opportunity to women to participate in almost every task in the community. This is a form of empowerment where they can acquire all-around needed for successful daily life. However, society has failed to empower women by giving them the same opportunity to enjoy the wealth that they have toiled for. Despite the freedom given to a man not to engage in many activities at home, a man is still in charge of the whole wealth and resource at home. In my opinion, there is no gender equality in Mosuo society. This can be attributed to the fact that women do not get time to go for recreation and fun activities like pool gaming despite running those businesses, but they are meant for men. Women only engage in fun activities as a way of looking for income or as a responsibility when tourists come (“Mosuo Society,” 2021).
Discussion three
Mosuo society seems to empower women by giving them the freedom of choice in their lives. They are encouraged that men should not dominate them; hence should feel about choosing whatever they want to do at any time they want to do it. On the contrary, society fails to empower women by failing to allow them to take leadership positions in society. Men are the leaders of the various women groups and chiefs of the society; hence women are only household leaders. Mosuo society does not practice equality since women are subjected to a lot of work than men. Despite caring for children, they are expected to provide for them, while men need help when work becomes much (“Mosuo Society,” 2021).
Discussion four
Women in the Mosuo community are empowered by allowing them to freely choose their marriage partners and abandon them when they want. This freedom gives power to women since they involve men in their life when he is needed most. Despite the empowerment, they fail to empower women by allowing them to practice walking marriage. Instead, this practice gives the men the power to sleep with the woman they want only if the woman does not show a sign that she has a man. In Mosuo society, gender equality is not practiced since only men are given leadership positions. The leaders of different women groups are men and also the chiefs (“Mosuo Society,” 2021).
Discussion five
The Mosuo society does not interfere with the life of a girl child when it comes to matters of social affairs. This is a form of empowerment of its kind since it is up to the girl child to start being responsible enough by making the right decisions about her life. However, society fails to empower by not being authoritative on the men despite being hosted in the women’s homes. In my own opinion, gender equality is lacking in Mosuo society. It would have been fair enough to not only having the right to make choices about life but also having “a say” in society too and making some leadership decisions (“Mosuo Society,” 2021).
