The Truman Show (1998)

Director: Peter Weir

Cast: Jim Carrey, Laura Linney, Noah Emerich, Natascha McElhone, Holland Taylor, Brian Delate, Blair Slate, Peter Krause, Heidi Schanze.

Synopsis: In this Peter Weir film, Jim Carrey takes on the lead as Truman Burbank. Truman (Jim Carrey) leads a seemingly perfect life such as that in most sitcoms. The character lives an unrealistic life on a reality television show and does not realize it until a stage light falls out of the sky. The insurance salesman (Jim Carrey) then considers traveling to Fiji. It was where Sylvia (Natascha McElhone), the show’s whistleblower, allegedly moved to after almost telling him the truth about his life. The concept of living a lie is crafted by the show’s producer Christof (Ed Harris), who conceptualized the Truman show and ran it for three decades.

Review:

Truman Burbank leads a peaceful life in Sea Haven, Florida, as an insurance salesman with his wife, Meryl Burbank.

Truman concurrently also is the star of the most popular reality television show despite his not knowing it. A television agency and stars adopted Truman in the show throughout his life. He lives in an artificial dome on an island used by the television studios to shoot the show. The truth is hidden from him until the 10 909th day of filming. A stage-light almost falls on Truman as he leaves his house for work. The falling of the light acts makes him question aspects of his life, such as his wife’s role (Laura Linney), who is fond of advertising in their conversations on household items, and the relocation of his childhood love, Sylvia (Natascha McElhone).

The Truman show’s background is a suburban neighborhood such as those shown on regular sitcoms and adapts this comedic sense. The show, however, seeks to lighten a phenomenal problem of not questioning one’s environment. Carrey, the main character, takes in all that occurs within his life for three decades without ever realizing the fact that all the people around him were actors. The sense of a lack of privacy and the show ratings also mimics a horror film plot where only the lead seems to find discrepancies within his environment. The film is a work of art that masterfully blends a horrifying truth with just the right amount of comedy.
